How the test works
Type the words as they appear and press space after each word. The test starts as soon as you type the first letter. When the time is up, you get your speed, accuracy and a level so you can see how you compare. Press Tab or Esc at any time to start over with new words.
Want a longer or shorter test? Pick 30 seconds, 3 minutes or 5 minutes above the test. Longer tests give a more stable result.
How your score is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). Because words have different lengths, the standard is to count every 5 characters as one word, including spaces. So 250 correct characters in one minute equals 50 WPM.
- WPM counts only words you typed correctly, plus the space after each one. Mistakes lower this number.
- Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. The gap between raw and WPM shows how much your errors cost you.
- Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that matched the text. Corrected mistakes still count as mistakes here.
What is a good typing speed?
Studies and typing courses don't agree on one number, but about 40 WPM is often given as the average for adults who type every day. Here is the rough guide we use for the label on your result:
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 25 | Getting started |
| 25 to 44 | Around average |
| 45 to 59 | Above average |
| 60 to 79 | Fast |
| 80 to 99 | Very fast |
| 100 and up | Expert |
Accuracy matters as much as speed. Aim for 95% or higher before you push the pace.
How to type faster
- Use the home row. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; and let each finger cover its own keys.
- Keep your eyes on the screen. Looking down at the keys breaks your rhythm.
- Go for accuracy first. Speed follows when your fingers stop correcting mistakes.
- Practise little and often. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session a week.
- Sit well. Keep your wrists straight and relaxed, with the screen at eye height.
Your results stay on your device
The test runs entirely in your browser. What you type is never sent anywhere, and you don't need an account. Your personal best is saved in your own browser, so it's still there next time you visit on the same device.
